Buses & Interfaces

Buses are ME interfaces that will import and export items and fluids into your system. There is also a storage bus which will work very differently. All of these bus’s use a channel and can also accept cards.

ME Import Bus

First let's look at how we can get items into our system. With quarries and mob farms it becomes tiresome emptying the chest by hand and throwing into the ME system.

Attaching a Import Bus to a chest will IMPORT anything inside that chest into the network.

The great thing about an import bus is that you can customise what times you want to import. By default you have one free slot and the option to have up to 3 cards.

By default the import bus will pull any items from its attached inventory into your system. Adding speed cards will increase the amount of items pulled at once (up to a stack per tick). Adding an item within the grid will tell the bus to only pull that item, this grid can be extended with a space card.

ME Export Bus

The export bus will export items OUT of your network, this will not EXPORT items from an inventory rather then Export items from the network to an inventory. The ME export bus will slowly pull items you have specified out of your network.

The export bus works very well in combination with the Trash Can from Extra Utilities 2. Having a mob farm that is funneling all the items to your ME system can clog up your system with weapons and other useless items:

Throwing these items out one by one is not so easy, each item can have a different damage value.

The export bus works wonders in this case, attaching the bus to a trash can and wire this up to your system. Remember that you only have 8 channels with normal wires and your system also needs power:

The export bus on its own will do nothing, you will need to right click the export bus and tell it what items you wish to remove from the system. By default you get 1 slot, by adding 1 capacity card this gets boosted to 5 and with 2 capacity cards this will get boosted to 9. You can add items into this inventory (ghost items) and it will slowly remove these items from the system. Items with NBT or Damage values will need a Fuzzy card, only one fuzzy card is needed for this. With the fuzzy card you can define what durability threshold items should match before they are removed from the system. Match any will remove all items regardless of the durability. Adding a speed card will increase the speed at which these items are removed:

The bottom left option will allow you to choose how it will remove items, whether it is systematically (one item then the next) or randomly (there are a few options). This export bus will keep removing these items until they are removed from the filter or the bus is disconnected or removed.

This is one common use for the Export bus but they are other options, you could remove certain ores and have them placed into certain machines (make sure you set machine inputs and outputs!). Just remember that the Export buss will pull items out of you system and the import buss will put items into your system, remember that when trying to automate a system.

Storage Bus

The storage bus can be added to anything that stores items, any items that are within that inventory will show up inside your system.

The storage bus can be used on any chest, barrel or another other inventory that is capable of holding items. The storage bus will ignore any input and output faces.

Right clicking on a storage bus will give you the option to drag and drop items (ghost items) into the grind, this will tell the storage bus to put any items you wish into its attached inventory. This can be toggled with the 3 option on the right, this can be set to a few different modes:

  • Bi-directonial (items in and out)
  • Extract items only or
  • insert items only

With these modes you can also hide that are in the inventory, setting the bus to insert mode and the bottom option to “No: only extractable items will be shown” will cause any items within this inventory not to show up when looking at your network via an interface panel. You can also clear the items within the grid with the 1st option. Cards can also be used within the storage bus, capacity cards will give you more slots to customise what items you want to store within the inventory, the fuzzy card allows items with NBT or damage values to be moved (only broken items or items below or above a certain threshold). Inverter cards will black list items rather than whitelist them.

ME Interface

The ME interface comes in 2 forms but it does the same job, it just depends what you wish to do with the interface. The thin form is useful if you want to provide several different interfaces in a single block of physical space, but each will need its own channel. The block form lets multiple other blocks connect to a single ME interface, using only one channel for the interface.

The ME Interface acts as an in between when working with pipes, tubes, networks, or machines from other mods. Having pipes feed into the interface will put these items into your network.

You can configure certain items to be exported from the ME Network into the ME Interface for use with other mods. Or use other mods to insert into any ME Interface. as long as it isn't full of exported materials it will add any added items into the ME Network.

The interface normally functions like a chest, however with one exception, if you place a storage bus on an interface, you essentially include the entire network instead, this allows networks to share huge sets of contents and to be chained together in a very effective manner. In addition to this mode, if you configure your interface to explicitly provide specific materials, the storage bus will behave as if the interface was a standard chest, disabling this advanced feature.

There are a few options which can be configured within the interface but this becomes more useful when autocrafting.

Fluid Interface

The fluid interface works just like the normal interface but with fluids, you can pump fluid straight into this to add them to your system providing you have fluid cells.

Level Emitter

The level emitter will allow you to send a redstone signal when a chosen item reaches a level you have defined. Setting Coal as the item and the limit to 64 will allow the level emitter to emit a signal when Levels are above or equal to limit or Emit when levels are below. This works well in conjunction with a redstone card and an import or export bus. The inverted level emitter will work much like the normal level emitter but inverted.

In this example the Fluid Import Bus has a redstone card that is active without a signal, the fluid level emitter is set to let off a redstone signal if there is over a certain amount of lava within the system:

Toggle Bus

A bus which functions similarly to ME Glass Cable or other cables, but it allows its connection state to be toggled by Redstone. This allows you to cut off a section of a ME Network.

When a redstone signal supplied the part enables the connection, ME Inverted Toggle Bus provides the reverse behavior by disabling the connection instead.

Annihilation/formation Plane

The ME Annihilation Plane is a part designed to destroy any block put in front of it. It can buffer a single operation. Buffered items will automatically be stored in ME Network's Storage as space is made available. The ME Formation Plane is a part designed to place or drop any item put into the ME Network. It functions as storage similar to a ME Storage Bus, so items that are added to the network are dropped or placed passively. You can configure the ME Formation Plane to indicate specific items it should place. Items are placed instantly when they enter the network.

There are fluid versions of these available and they work in the same way but with fluids (this is covered under fluids)
